Choosing Your Wedding Date: 4 Things to Keep in Mind

One of the things I love about January is that it’s engagement season and if you’re one of those lucky couples who got engaged over the Holidays, then a huge congratulations! Now that he put a ring on it, you’ll want to turn your attention to selecting and booking your date. The perfect wedding date is more than just a day on your calendar — it’s the first day of your happily ever after! Whether it’s during a season you love or a day that marks a momentous occasion in your relationship, the right date will make your wedding even more unforgettable. The date you choose to say “I do” should be memorable since you’ll get to cherish it for the rest of your lives!

There are a number of factors to consider when it comes to choosing the best day to get married. At HauteFetes, we’ve compiled a list of things to keep in mind to help ensure you land on the right date for your wedding!

1. Choose a Season for Your Wedding

Each season offers its own unique charm for your wedding day! There’s no right or wrong time to get married. It all comes down to what you envision for your special day.

Spring Weddings

If you’ve always pictured yourself saying your vows beneath a canopy of cherry blossoms or surrounded by blooms, spring might be the perfect time to pick a wedding date! Spring weddings offer a romantic, whimsical quality that many brides love. With a natural palette of pastels in bloom and mild temperatures, spring can be the perfect time to plan a garden wedding.

Summer Weddings

Summer is the most popular time of the year to get married — and for good reason! Offering warm temperatures, plenty of sunshine, colorful florals, and carefree vibes, summer can be a great time to tie the knot. The weather conditions make the season perfect for beach weddings and outdoor wedding receptions! One exception to this is if you decide to get married in the Caribbean or Mexico. Keep in mind the summer months can be very hot and muggy with a higher chance of rainfall.

Fall Weddings

Fall weddings offer a rustic charm, making them a perfect time to have a vineyard wedding. If you’ve always pictured yourself saying “I do” with a backdrop of fiery reds, oranges, golds, and brown hues, then an autumn wedding date may be perfect for you! Pumpkins, sunflowers, and hay bales can all make for beautiful decor! If you’re thinking of getting married in Europe, Fall is stunning whether you’re in a vineyard in the south of France or the hillsides of Tuscany. Also, Fall is a great time if you’re thinking of getting married in a popular destination or city since the vast number of tourists will have also dissipated.

Winter Weddings

Is there anything more romantic than the magic of snowflakes on an enchanted winter evening? Winter weddings can feel like something out of a Disney movie! Picture fairy lights, fireplaces crackling, hot cocoa, and warm blankets to keep your guests warm! A winter wedding date can be perfect if you want a cozy, intimate wedding ceremony and reception.

If you’re planning an international destination wedding, it’s important to familiarize yourself with that country’s seasons. This is something your wedding planner can assist you with.

2. Choose a Wedding Date with Meaning

Your wedding anniversary is a day that you’ll celebrate for the rest of your lives! You might consider choosing a wedding date that holds some significance for you as a couple. It might be the anniversary of your first date, when you became an official couple, or when you first met!

3. Choose the Right Month for Your Wedding

When choosing a month for your wedding day, it’s important to take the weather into consideration. Be sure to research which months have the best weather. We’ve all heard the saying “April showers bring May flowers.” It’s important to have an indoor-outdoor wedding space or a tented wedding in case one of those “showers” happens on your wedding day. Similarly, be sure to consider months with a low probability of snow storms if you’re considering a winter wedding.

Another factor to consider when choosing a month for your wedding date is the holidays. If you plan a wedding too close to a family-oriented holiday, you may have fewer guests in attendance. This can be problematic for November and December weddings.

Each month brings with it unique considerations. Your wedding planner can help you navigate this process so that you can be fully prepared for what your wedding day will bring, whether that be hot weather for summer weddings, the risk of rain for spring or fall weddings, the chance of snow for winter weddings, and holiday travel.

4. Choose the Right Day for Your Wedding

When choosing the best wedding date, you’ll want to choose the day that works best for you! Some couples may choose to get married on a Friday night or Sunday afternoon, while others might stick to a timeless Saturday wedding reception. The day and time you choose will determine the cost of the venue, as well as the number of additional events you’re hosting over the course of your wedding weekend.

When Should You Choose Your Wedding Date?

The sooner you choose your wedding date, the better! Wedding venues and vendors tend to get booked well in advance. Choosing a date as early as possible increases the chances of scheduling the venue of your dreams or the photographer you’ve had your heart set on! Just be sure to get your wedding planner on board before you book your date so that they can help identify the perfect venue for you.
